When characters in books/plays kill themselves with a dagger, how does that work?

Don't worry, I'm not going to kill myself, but there are so many stories where a character kills themselves by stabbing themselves in the heart (like in Romeo and Juliet,) but wouldn't that be difficult to have the dagger get to the heart without running into the ribs? Just wondering...
