What do you need to be a blacksmither?

well i love engineering etc and i wouldnt mind doing also blacksmithing. I love working with metal and hitting it about and always loved knifes,daggers,machetes,swords etc but what i want to know if what would u need to be one? Do they earn alot or low? Will i need qualifications or apprenticeship?
